There are lots of different ways you can go about setting up an online shop e.g.

Setting up an eBay shop

This doesn't require you to even have your own website. The online catalogue, shopping and payment facilities are all provided by eBay. You just have to concentrate on managing your product inventory and fulfilling your orders.

Using ready-made software

This is the preferred option most people take. Most ecommerce sites require the same features so there's little point building a completely new system from scratch if one already exists. There are commercial packages like Actinic or Open Source (free) packages like osCommerce and phpShop. Using these kind of systems helps to reduce costs and means you can get your site online and trading much quicker.

Building a new bespoke system

If your product catalogue is extremely specialised, your products have unusual options or if the methods of calculating the price of an item are quite unique e.g. by surface area, your only option might be to pay somebody to develop a completely bespoke system for you (or modify one of the Open Source packages to fit your needs). This option is the most expensive but it gives you more control over how your site functions which in many cases is extremely important.
