UK Web Hosting FAQs

What is shared (virtual) web hosting?

In order for a web site to be accessible via the internet it must reside on a web server. This kind of hardware is expensive to buy and requires continuous monitoring and maintenance by skilled system administrators.

Most companies or individuals do not have the resources to invest in their own web server and IT team. This is where shared web hosting comes into play.

In the same way that a landlord rents out apartments in a large building, shared hosting providers rent out allocated portions of web space on high capacity servers. This means the cost to the customer is a minute fraction of what it would be to own and manage their own web server, with the added benefit that they do not require the technical expertise to manage and maintain it.
